Thunderbird-buffalo BOWIE
Handcrafted silver wire inlay and through handle stabilization.
This Bowie knife is made from D2 tool steel and the blade is .245" X
2.0" X 10.5". The
overall length is 15.5". The blade is Cannell ground. It has been
sub-zero quenched with a triple temper to ~Rc 60. The spine of the Bowie
has hand filework. The choil is my half Heart design. The
pommel has a rope filework pattern. The spacer before the stainless steel
pommel is bronze. The black leather sheath is hand sewn by me and has a
longhorn steer concho with a leather rope at the top and bottom. The oval guard
is stainless steel.
The oval guard is followed by bronze with a hand filed rope pattern and then
stainless steel. The choil is my half Heart design.
The handle is the main part of this Bowie. It has silver wire (.999%) inlayed in a block of California Buckeye Burl. The inlayed pattern is mine of a Thunderbird joined with a Buffalo skull. The top inlay is a mountain horizon with a river before it. These patterns were generated by me when I use a stencil to help layout the inlay pattern. I follow my pattern using a chisel method to guide the silver wire inlay. When it's inlayed in the Buckeye burl the wood is soft. I then stabilize the handle entirely through the block using a vacuum, pressure and heat process system. This is where the first comes in . The silver wire inlay has been done for centuries. The Loctite Resinol 90C stabilizes the silver wire inlay after I inlaid it into the handle. The silver wire inlay is my new addition for Knifemakers and stabilizing the silver Inlay.
Today this is a confirmed World first system for the Knifemaker's stabilized silver wire process
